SASHA SHOW wound up on top of the Global Sub Top 50 ranking for the second week in a row. This time out, the family-friendly creator dominated the competition. He added 3.8 million new subscribers to bring his lifetime total up to 13.8 million. He doubled his rate of subscriber acquisition week-over-week.

The #2 channel in the Global Sub Top 50 finished far behind SASHA SHOW, but in another context, the star of that channel was a big winner this week. In fact, he’s now leading the world’s seventh-most populous country for a fourth term, and his large YouTube following helped him return to that post.

Lula came up big on YouTube and at the ballot box

When Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva first became the President of Brazil in 2003, YouTube didn’t exist yet. Flash forward 23 years, and the leading video platform has become a crucial tool for the veteran politician.

On October 25, the man known as Lula earned a surprising win in Brazil’s presidential election. His upswell on YouTube was equally tremendous. His personal channel added 1.3 million new subscribers in the week leading up to the election. About one-third of Lula’s subscribers joined his digital community over the past seven days.

During his campaign, Lula used his YouTube channel to share inspirational videos, attack his opponents, and deliver messaging related to policy. Now that he’s in office, he’ll be able to follow the lead of U.S. politicians like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has turned his social channels into official mouthpieces.

Here’s another thing Lula and Mamdani have in common: They are sharing their victories with the liberal coalitions that backed them. Lula’s return to the Palácio da Alvorada represents a broad left-wing effort to defeat the Bolsonaro family, and some of the channels that exemplify that movement are also booming on YouTube.

In this week’s Global Sub Top 50, the #35 spot belongs to the Instituto Conhecimento Liberta. The ICL was launched in 2020 by Co-Founder Eduardo Moreira, an economist who has publicly supported liberal politicians like Lula. On the ICL YouTube channel, Moreira and his colleagues offer digital courses, educational content, and podcasts, to go along with a plethora of political news videos.

The ICL added 310,000 new subscribers during the fourth week of October, bringing its lifetime total to 2.5 million. In videos celebrating the big win, the ICL identified the role “alternative media” played in Lula’s shock victory.

Lula and the ICL are showing that the idea of the “influencer election” is not just a U.S. phenomenon. Politicians and their factions are embracing YouTube, and they are being rewarded in return. By reaching young people on social media, world leaders are building coalitions that can sustain them across multiple terms.

Even if he falls from the #2 spot in the Global Sub Top 50 next week, expect Lula to maintain a strong presence on YouTube. He may be 80 years old, but his digital presence shows that he’s young at heart.
