This week, the #1 spot in the Global Top 50 belongs to Cadel and Mia. The couple channel picked up 1.16 billion weekly views during a week when no other YouTube channel crossed the billion-view threshold. The Aussie duo was able to increase its traffic by 32% week-over-week.

Overall, it was another dominant week for Indian channels, which accounts for more than 40% of the Global Top 50. A run of holiday celebrations has boosted South Asian creators, and that trend continued at the end of October. And no, I’m not talking about Halloween. In India, the festivities are quite different.

On India’s Unity Day, the government and its citizens are promoting harmony

In 2014, India added a new holiday to its calendar. October 31, the birthday of independence activist Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, is now known as Unity Day in the world’s most populous nation.

To promote the relatively new holiday, India’s federal government is turning to YouTube. The #21 channel in this week’s Global Top 50 belongs to the Central Bureau of Communication, a New Delhi-based agency that we’ve seen in our rankings before. Earlier this year, we highlighted the CBC as a tool Indian leaders were using to deliver PSAs related to digital safety and security.

Six months later, the uploads on the official CBC YouTube channel are striking a more festive tone. One video, which has received more than 100 million views in less than two weeks, toes the line between celebration and propaganda. It highlights a monument to Sardar Patel — the tallest statue in the world — while also featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian armed forces.

Boosted by its Unity Day PSAs, the CBC YouTube channel collected 541.4 million weekly views. Meanwhile, elsewhere in the ranking, the success of other Indian channels is showing that the themes of unity and diversity are catching on within the general population.

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is an Indian sitcom that predates the establishment of Unity Day. The show known as TMKOC premiered in 2008 and has run for nearly 5,000 episodes since then.

TMKOC is set in a diverse community in Mumbai, and its stories revolve around a colorful cast of characters as they strive to work together and live in harmony. In other words, TMKOC extols the same virtues that define Unity Day. It’s not too surprising, then, that a channel devoted to TMKOC is trending up during the week of Unity Day.

The channel in question collected 670.3 million weekly views, increasing its YouTube traffic by 3% week-over-week. Only nine YouTube hubs got more views during the final week of October.

When more than 40% of the channels in the Global Top 50 come from India, the South Asian nation’s observances will have a massive impact on week-to-week trends. That will continue into November, as major holidays like Diwali approach.

When viewership surges as a result of those Indian festivals, who will benefit? The response to Unity Day shows that there’s room both official channels and individuals on the charts. Perhaps those two forces can channel Sardar Patel by working together and striving for the #1 spot in the ranking.
