Earlier this year, Tubi announced its intention to launch original programs alongside some of the biggest stars on TikTok. Seven months later, that initiative is coming into focus.
The Fox-owned platform defined by its ad-supported video on-demand (AVOD) model has revealed the first slate of shows that will emerge out of its Creatorverse Incubator. That was the name Tubi gave to a partnership with TikTok built around long-form content. Now, as Tubi moves forward with its incubator, it is spreading its creator push across an eclectic variety of formats, genres, and tones.
The programs developed through the incubator include an animated superhero comedy (Lynnell Jones Jr.‘s Feeling Super), a gender-bending dating show (Kai Cameron‘s Kai Picks the Guy), a big-city-girl/small-town-boy love triangle (Yasmine Sahid‘s Never Have I Ever Spent the Winter with the Romano Brothers), a film-inspired horror show (Allie Tran‘s Scare Tours), and a Down Under travelogue (Marc Sebastian‘s A Great Australian Gay Sidequest). Among the ten shows greenlit by Tubi, 12 notable TikTokers are getting top billing.
TikTok helped Tubi identify creators who are ready to develop their own long-form shows, and it is expected to use its Spotlight product to promote the resulting Tubi originals. In a statement, TikTok Global Head of Entertainment and Microseries Dawn Yang highlighted the “unique perspectives” that will get serial opportunities through the Creatorverse Incubator.
“The creators we’re working with have built a following, a point of view, and a body of work that people come back for,” added Tubi VP of Creator Partnerships Kudzi Chikumbu, who is a former TikTok exec. “The Incubator is where we come in as their partner, giving them the creative freedom to grow what they’ve started. We’re proud to support them as they create their first TV shows, making ambitious work they may not otherwise be able to make and growing beyond the audiences and formats that had previously defined them.”
The Creatorverse slate covers a lot of ground, but as Chikumbu alludes to, the shows also target the categories that have become reliable audience magnets on Tubi. Horror, young adult content, and comedy have been recurring genres within Tubi’s previous creator initiatives, and the platform is doubling down on those popular genres.
Release dates for the Creatorverse shows haven’t been revealed, but don’t expect Tubi to stay idle as it rolls out its fresh slate of programming. While it turns creators into long-form showrunners, Fox is also looking for new ways to connect with rising influencers. For example, Fox-affiliated Red Seat Ventures recently announced a play targeting the newsletter industry, so Fox is committed to meeting creators wherever they want to produce their next piece of work.
